The Mark series of aviator watches is one that traces its lineage all the way back to 1936, when IWC first produced the Spezialuhr für Flieger specifically for pilots. The watch exhibits many of the classical features that we now instantly associate with pilot-style watches: a black dial, luminous hands to increase nighttime visibility and a rotating bezel which could be used to time intervals up to one hour. The Mark is as much a watch icon as the Submariner is when it comes to dive watches or the Speedmaster is when it comes to racing chronographs. The “Mark” name was derived colloquially from a series of 12 watches that are collectively known as the Dirty Dozen, which were commissioned by the British Ministry of Defense in the early 1940s, and of all of which were designated Mark X. The successor to this model, the Mark XI, cemented the model’s legacy. This watch entered the RAF’s service in 1949 and prior to being issued, the watches were put through a grueling test of their chronometry, resistance to magnetism, and water resistance. The Mark XVII is the latest in this storied line. First released in 2012, this watch combines the best of both worlds, with its timeless and no-nonsense highly-legible dial paired with modern standards of finishing and bracelet construction. This 41mm watch is equipped with a soft iron inner cage that shields the movement from magnetic fields and the crystal is secured against blowouts arising from sudden drops in pressure. The example we are offering here was first sold in 2015 and comes with the full set, including the original factory IWC stainless steel bracelet with a double trigger-actuated deployant clasp. The watch is in fantastic condition, and we are listing it at an unbeatable price, so don’t hesitate to write your own legends while wearing it!
